What Do I Read?...

a cheat sheet

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17

REFLECTION

That’s a big question with a lot of good answers and a couple of great ones.

Before giving supplementary suggestions, I’ll state the obvious: read the Bible and some recovery literature.

Now, I’m most familiar with the OG recovery literature from AA and it’s what I’ll primarily reference. Other twelve step programs specific to other vices usually have sprouted from AA.

So: 1) The Bible 2) The Big Book 3) 12 Steps 12 Traditions

This is a great start.

What we’re really doing is developing the daily habit of dwelling on these things.

Particularly God’s word. Much of recovery literature is simply expounding on principles in scripture, but it’s helpful to expose ourselves to both.

We’ve gotten good at seeking our vices one day at a time. Now, we must retrain ourselves with God’s help to seek truth. Dwelling on Him and setting aside time to read daily is the beginning of replacing those bad habits.

When do we do this?

Again, let’s look at role models for what’s worked best. Ultimately, we do it when we can and whenever works best to establish the habit. The classic approach, though, is to begin the day in a time of devotion.

If possible, doing this first thing will develop a rich habit that often sets the tone of the day.
