But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

Look around. It doesn’t take much to find people who lost a lot more than us as a result of their addiction.
Likewise, there are plenty of people who escaped seemingly unscathed.
It’s easy to compare.
It’s easy to find ways to discount our own spiritual journey.
And it’s easy to slip into the habit of spending more time looking around than digging in.
I turned the corner of sobriety precisely when I was meant to. It was the point in my life when I mustered just enough willingness to try things differently.
Could there have been other moments further along?
Sure.
Why risk death by waiting for them?
Everyone’s path is a different version of the same thing, and isn’t it reassuring to know that God is waiting for us to make that final turn?
He doesn’t much care about the hundred other false starts we’ve haphazardly attempted.
He doesn’t worry about the meager, half-hearted efforts to sober ourselves up.
He doesn’t dwell on how we’ve continued to turn our backs on him and our fellows.
He knows all of us.
He died for us.
He waits for us.
Sobriety isn’t easy. Especially getting sober initially.
But there are plenty of resources to help get us there.
You know what, though? It’s not even a prerequisite to turning our will and life over to the care of God.
That can come first; it did for me.
Then, caught in the undertow of the love of God, I was pulled toward sobriety.
Slower than I wish it would have been…but I got there nonetheless.
God, thank you for unearned grace.
