Truth

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

‭‭Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭23‬-‭24‬

Reflection

If I’m not careful, I can slip sideways into one of two bad situations.

One comes naturally for the nonbeliever and turns into a real pickle when willpower butts up against an unsolvable issue.

This is the stance of innocence.

Thoughts like: truth is relative, sin is a bad word, everyone should be able to do what they want so long as it doesn’t hurt others.

These things look attractive to us in small doses, but they run dry eventually. And that’s not to mention that our addiction certainly has affected others.

The second pitfall threatens any future spiritual growth and chokes out the possibility of joy.

This is the prospect of grace being a means to an end.

Grace is enough. And it’s free. So just give me enough to sustain me and I’ll be on my way.

This “please and thank you” line of thinking undercuts the depth of faith and dismisses the totality of what saving grace looks like when lived out.

Yes, sure, when we are first sobering up, we need some fertilizer and tender care.

But as we move into a redeemed life, we are kidding ourselves if we think being sober means anything to most people.

We’ve still got a life to live.

Sobriety is table stakes.

Let’s work toward refining the eternal, angelic being we were intended to be.

God, get my big head out of the way.
