For Today

All we’ve got

TRUTH

For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

Romans‬ ‭7‬:‭15‬ ‭ESV‬‬

REFLECTION

Truer words were never spoken, and truer still to those who’ve found themselves trapped by that self-centered, addictive vice grip.

We forever try and lessen its hold on ourselves. We seek to shake it, and all the while help it to tighten its grip.

The great tragedy of our reasoning is how irrelevant it ends up being when we are backed up against the wall.

Our brains scream that if we can just wrap our heads around the problem and attack it through willpower, through prayer, through a simple reset of habits that then we will be free.

It makes sense.

It should be true.

We should be free of the curse of hitting ourselves in the face day after day.

Why do we keep repeating the same mistakes?

There’s nothing new here. It’s the same surrender conundrum that Paul battled with too.

Our minds can’t solve the very problem they helped create. It takes a spiritual crucifixion and turning over of the reigns to Him who has all power.

It’s easy to forget that that leaves me with zero power. What I get must be siphoned from either my selfish propulsion or the infinite grace of God.

Should be an easy choice.

It seems to take a lifetime of one-day-at-a-time practice, though.

God, grant me the strength for today.
