Truth

But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭10

Reflection

You can sober up without Christ.

You can drink with him.

Plenty of people do both.

After all, this mortal flesh is just a temporary home regardless of what you believe.

Eventually we’re fertilizer; if anything remains, it won’t be this body.

But even the agnostic considers God as an option when he can find no other way out of the alcoholic mess.

When there’s nothing left to try and a track record of continued, progressively worse addictive behavior, God starts to look like a less crazy option.

Particularly when plenty of otherwise happy and sane folks are walking around free from the bondage of addictions they profess to have previously been enslaved by.

Even so, salvation by way of Christ isn’t required for anyone to address their own addiction.

I didn’t delve deeply into my own faith until I’d walked a few years into physical sobriety.

But I recommend it as early as you can stomach it.

I stopped drinking because it started hurting too much.

I couldn’t control it. I stopped enjoying it. I was too young for it. I was making bad choices.

But stopping a thing isn’t enough.

Life becomes a giant vacuum if I don’t have anything to replace addiction with. I’ll just slot in some other habit or obsession.

I need something infinite for the cornerstone.

The steps keep it generic, but they point me toward God.

It’s ok that I start slow. It’s ok that I don’t understand everything on the front end. Or ever.

It’s the seeking that’s important.

It’s the invitation to change me that’s critical.

God, I invite you into my life; not just for today.
