Truth
Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
Romans 15:7
Reflection
We are screwed if we think we can do any of this alone.
I fall into this trap all the time.
I think that whatever past good deeds I’ve done or whatever reputation I’ve earned or whatever spiritual defense I’ve built up will be sufficient to ward off the addiction that used to haunt me.
And yeah, that’s partially true.
As I’ve made forward progress over the long haul, it has blockaded the path backward.
It does get easier to stay sober, provided I’m sharpening my spiritual tools.
But I’m never alone, nor should I try to subsist on my own solely by seemingly honorable things like prayer and the pursuit of God.
A very big, very real part of that pursuit is to live alongside one another and share in pain as well as joy.
The next version of me who stumbles into a moment of clarity may very well need me to shed some light on things for him.
I’ll only know if I stay and help.
I’ll only know if I look for ways to shed bits of light.
I’ll only know if I welcome those around me.
Getting clean was messy.
God, open my eyes to the next me around the corner.
