Truth

For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Reflection

A lot of people want to do the wrong two-steps.

Theyโ€™ll have a moment of clarity or two, sober up for a bit and admit that yes, they were powerless.

Step one, check.

Thank God to now see the light.

Then, fueled by the prospect of a new way of living, they turn towards evangelizing others. Everyone must know about this sober life!

Step twelve, kinda-check.

Or, having conceded to step one, they may turn first to the heavy lifting of restitution by immediately trying to set things right that took years to fall apart.

Step nine, check.

Now, the twelve steps arenโ€™t mandatory. But they can be very helpful. And if weโ€™re going to use them, itโ€™s best to go ahead and knock them out in order.

Little things like inviting God to direct our lives and doing some moral and spiritual housecleaning go a long way in our new life if done before we start going out into the world and potentially causing inadvertent harm.

However, there is a two-step thatโ€™s worth doing on the front end.

It can be easy to jump into outward action without taking a hard look at our inner motivations. But we must.

What do we believe in? What are we willing to believe in?

Lasting sobriety requires a faith that doesnโ€™t have to start strong, but it needs to start somewhere. Step two is the springboard by which we can begin to live differently.

In the same way, belief in God, even at the skeptical level requires a verbal commitment. This is step 3.

You donโ€™t have to paint it too religious to get started.

But open mindedness and curiosity will pay dividends.

God, you are God.
