Truth
Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand.
Philippians 4:5
Reflection
If I want to live in a vacuum, it only takes one drink.
It’s the first one that would take me out. Could I handle it? Could there be room for more than one before the vice grip took hold?
Am I immune yet?
It only takes one to open up several doors.
Door number one invites poison back to the forefront. Simple consumption sets off a complex obsession.
Door number two sows doubt in and around me. I’m pretty good at manufacturing reality even though I’m out of practice. All it takes is the germ of an idea. And it won’t take long to alienate and hurt others whether or not I do anything more than throw away long held beliefs and practices.
Door number three lets out a cool breeze that swims past in a moment never to return.
I don’t want to feel but I can’t help chasing the memory of feelings lost to time.
Sobriety brings with it a whole host of problems.
If I don’t replace the obsession to drink with an obsession to live, the reasons to keep leaning forward dissipate quickly with no regard for how many loving onlookers are around me.
Yes: we’ve got to get obsessed and stay obsessed with something.
We’ve got to chisel out a place for God deep down underneath the flimsy but layered armor that we’ve built up.
Self-sufficiency is a cheap momentary thrill that kills me very slowly.
God, give me your great obsession.
