The Rut

It starts small

TRUTH

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Psalm‬ ‭119‬:‭11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

REFLECTION

The key is intent.

The way to refine intent is to pick something to focus on.

The way to pick something is to be led either by ourselves or by another.

The best way to focus on the wrong thing is to allow me to guide me. To let my heart run the show. To follow the desires that spring up within me.

Now that doesn’t always equate to the wrong things, but the wrong stuff invariably sneaks in and begins to snuff out any good intentions that I set out with if given enough time.

Instead, we need a guide.

This is an area where recovery circles excel in at least emphasizing the truth of the matter and the way to start getting out of trouble.

We encourage sponsorship, which is another word for mentorship, which is another way to say we need someone else to do our thinking for us in the beginning.

We are mentally ill. We’ve continued to do the same things expecting different results.

We need good, orderly direction.

And then, we need to knead the truth into the fabric of our lives. We need to store up the word of God so that it can work in and through us.

It’s not an overnight matter. Recovery isn’t either. Often, these directly Biblical incentives will not seem important until the haze of addiction wears off. That was the case for me.

But it is of the utmost importance that we fill our minds with good things. From there will flow the actions and thoughts that make up our life.

God, feed my soul.
