Truth

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Reflection

So, yeah, alcohol is not the problem.

I mean, yes, it is a problem, but it’s not the problem.

We have the ability to completely blind ourselves to the remedy because we hack at the wrong root.

Anyone can sober up a bit. True, it’s harder depending on circumstances. But given enough grit, motivation and time, anyone can get physically clean.Β

For many normal people, this is where things get better.

But for us, this is where the new trouble starts.

Having found a temporary salve for a spiritual malady in our addiction, when it’s taken away, it is painful.

We must find something else to put there.Β Β

This is why relapse can happen quickly.

This is why after a period of seemingly happy sobriety, relapse can seem to come out of the blue.

This is why transference of addiction occurs.

We are seekers.

We need relief even if external circumstances aren’t too grim.

We are looking for the ease and comfort that used to be readily accessible.

We are looking for the still waters of the soul, but we often don’t know it.

We are looking for the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit but we certainly haven’t considered that as a remedy before.

Handle expectations with care.

We are entering a lifelong hunt.

No longer will cheap thrills suffice.

We’re going to get really thirsty.

Luckily, we have a way out. We have someone who has endured temptation and now offers us living water.

God, let me drink deeply from your well.
