TRUTH
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
REFLECTION
I’m used to guarding myself from danger, but I don’t give my heart the same attention.
I reflexively pull away from people and places that threaten me, but I’m strangely attracted to soul poison.
This corrosion began when I started drifting from the anchors that had wisely been set in my life.
I began to drift away from the fellowship of believers. I began to drift away from the beliefs I had at one time also held. I began to drift from that moral compass embedded in us all.
I called it curiosity.
And that’s fine to have. Question everything—no problem there.
But under the guise of questioning, I was simply going my own way. Following my heart—the master of deceit.
Addiction and self-centeredness prey on the unguarded heart. It is a wellspring from which they can nest and brood and multiply their intentions.
Resurfacing in sobriety, it can feel limiting to fall back in line. It can feel repetitive to have to follow the narrow path. It can feel like the simpleton’s way out.
That’s because we become easily desensitized to the lies of doing things our own way and strangely blind to the brutal results.
Freedom tastes sweet. But it doesn’t always remove the temptations that claw toward my heart’s center.
Sometimes, it takes a daily eviction of those brooding lies. Don’t be discouraged. That’s forward progress.
God, help me move forward into the light.
