Truth

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭2

Reflection

I didn’t set out to get addicted, did you?

The beginning was a harmless, guarded experiment.

So I thought.

And you know? Sometimes that’s all it is. Sometimes we don’t fall into a downward spiral.

Doesn’t make it right, but it doesn’t always end terribly.

The problem is, we never know on the front end.

Today, I try to adopt a new way of thinking and acting. I try to stay within the guardrails of my spiritual walk.

I know what’s outside them.

And I don’t have to walk very far outside them to run into consequences.

When I first drank it was at least in part because I was experimenting with my own beliefs. I was mulling over whether to take them at face value or test them myself.

Testing turned into discarding pretty quickly.

The allure of the world is too much for me to handle.

I proved that in a big way, and I hope to not have to repeat that mistake so drastically ever again.

But we live in the world so I’m not at liberty to simply check out and live in a holier-than-thou bubble. (Nor do I much want to).

I’ve got to be rooted in something.

So, we come back to one day at a time. We come back to little bits of forward progress. We come back to turning our will and life over to the care of God.

God, graft me into your plan again.
