TRUTH

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭29‬

REFLECTION

Depending on your religious comfort level, this passage can be very reassuring or very prickly.

It helps me to know and believe that despite the circumstances of my future or the events of my past, God has directed me to this moment right here.

He has given me a second chance. (Or fifty-second chance, as the case might be).

He continues to seek us even through the addictive blunderings that go on for years. The misadventures of our self-absorption present no problems for His acceptance and love of us.

It’s hard to wrap our heads around because we don’t usually operate this way.

We can’t seem to not judge others, so how could a loving, all-powerful and all-knowing God pursue us after all we’ve done?

Thankfully, he doesn’t play by our rules. And even better, he invites us to play by different rules too.

This is great news if you’re as spiritually scuffed up as me.

Turns out, He wants us despite ourselves.

Turns out, those spiritual handicaps are helpful witnesses to others.

Turns out, His plan is so much bigger than we imagined it’s laughable to think we could navigate without Him.

And yet we still try.

I’m limited only by my self-defeating doubt and the spiritual slothfulness it leaves in its trail.

God, give me faith like a child.
