Truth
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
Psalm 32:11
Reflection
I like prescribing gratitude lists.
It’s an easy, foolproof way to have someone reframe perspective and dig into the realities in front of them.
Sure, you can throw down a few generalities in no time.
But for the desperate, for the broken and for the hopeless in self sobriety, gratitude feels akin to poison.
It can feel like lying at first.
What do we have to be grateful for when everything has fallen apart?
What can I possibly thank God for when I’ve blown up my life, not to mention the lives of those closest to me?
It’s ok to be irritated.
No one signs up for addiction and the necessary pangs of recovery when we finally give up and give in.
But the pity I give myself will lead me back to a drink. I can’t afford not to go to any lengths to stay sober.
I can’t afford to believe that I am unique.
I can’t afford not to follow directions.
So, gratitude lists, here we go.
I’m grateful the crappy feelings of today smell a little better than yesterday’s.
I’m grateful I haven’t gone further down the line.
I’m grateful to be invited to keep coming back.
I’m grateful for a God who has endured temptation.
I’m grateful for the breeze.
I’m grateful for physical exhaustion instead of mental fatigue.
I’m grateful for sleep instead of passing out.
I’m grateful for the memory of a concert.
I’m grateful that this is the beginning.
God, keep my bitter expectations right behind my hopeful actions
