Truth
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Psalm 32:8
Reflection
When will this begin, exactly?
It can feel like an eternity between resignation and recovery.
Once we’re at the point of needing help, we typically persevere through the hardships of addiction till we hit something.
Once we’re at the point of accepting help, we’ve burnt some or all of the bridges around us.
Once we’re at the point of beginning to live sober, we’re either pissed off, discouraged or both.
And once we finally start to feel better, we look around and realize that time takes time.
Rush to get better. Don’t get in too big of a rush to feel better.
It’s good to remember that our thinking is still skewed. We aren’t going to recover all at once.
Waking up to joyful acclaim isn’t one of the promises of this new way of life.
What are we modeling our life and expectations around, anyway?
There will be troubles.
And you know what, there could be more troubles after sobering up than before.
Our bigger concern ought to be in the orientation of our lives.
Where am I dwelling? Where do my thoughts go in still moments? What do I think will make me content?
God, protect me from the blinding mess of a new life.
The Solution is Simple
The best way to stay sober is free: go to meetings and do what your sponsor tells you to.
You don’t need my book. I wrote it because it’s what I wanted in a daily reflection.
I published it so I could keep passing it on.
These emails will continue, but I personally like having a physical book.
If you want to help support the project, I’d be grateful. The book is available on Amazon below:
