Fear of Death...

brings spurts of faith

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me;

Psalm‬ ‭59‬:‭1‬

Today’s Reflection

Think of a time you have been truly afraid.

Fear brings with it a deep desire to believe in something otherworldly.

In these moments of fear, we often find ourselves turning to faith, seeking comfort and protection in the divine.

Many of the psalms are David crying out to God for protection, for deliverance, for vengeance and for freedom.

We say foxhole prayers during our drinking when the way forward seems impossible. We cry out for relief.

But it’s short lived.

Once the immediate danger has passed, we tend to forget our prayers and promises, returning to our old ways. The pattern repeats.

Fear triggers faith, and then both fade.

Is faith genuine if it only surfaces during times of fear? Or is it a survival instinct, a desperate cry for help during times of distress?

Maybe this is just hope. Faith comes later and builds upon the combination of desperation, action and hindsight.

The ultimate goal should be to cultivate a faith that is constant and unwavering, not one that ebbs and flows.

God, work in me to build the faith I lack.
