Truth

For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

‭‭Romans‬ ‭11‬:‭32

Reflection

We’ve all got our own personal favorite shortcomings.

It’s the thing we turn to when we need a breather.

It’s the vice we grip when we need a way out.

It’s the lie we believe when we’re tired.

It’s the relationship we feed when we’re curious.

It’s the temptation we succumb to when we wake.

It’s the gentle curve in our lives that twists us off course.

The idea of disobedience implies that I’ve got to answer to someone, and that simple truth caused me to kick back in self-reliant defiance for a long time.

I want to answer to me.

I don’t like the prospect of relying on anyone or anything even though it’s basically a prerequisite for living any kind of healthy life.

Addiction picks us off when we separate ourselves from others.

It’s one of the many ways to get off the spiritual beam.

And I realized what was happening; I just thought more highly of myself and my own abilities to course correct when I needed too.

There it is again: self-reliance in the face of overwhelming odds.

God forbid I have to ask anyone for help.

When we talk about sobriety and faith being the easier, softer ways, this is what we mean.

After a whirlwind of chaotic, self-centered life in addiction, accepting someone else’s directions is much calmer and highly recommended.

After hardening to the prospect of God caring for me despite me being the one to have walked away, accepting his mysterious love is freeing.

God, I don’t want to do that again; thanks for the way back.
