TRUTH
Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.
Luke 7:47 ESV
REFLECTION
It doesn’t make the past better, but it certainly gives it a better purpose.
Actually, when I reminisce on the past, I’m usually left feeling a weird mixture of immense gratitude and intense pain.
Recovery commonly teaches that we will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it, but that’s a curious edge to walk.
Maybe I haven’t progressed far enough in my own recovery, but I still have deep regret from time to time.
Do I wish for my life to be different now? Would I exchange the family and blessings I have for an alternative path way back then?
No, of course not.
We are the sum of our experiences thus far. But it doesn’t change the fact that I wish I had lived better through those earlier years.
It’s because I’ve found a way out and a way of faith that really fulfills that I review my missteps while shaking my head at myself.
The key point of recovery is that the past will inform our present actions and service work.
It’s exactly because of my blunders that I’m able to uniquely share with others whom I come across.
God opens doors of relationship that would otherwise not happen.
And when I round the corner of my thoughts, I do have a much fuller gratitude for my present life than had I not been lost for a while.
God, thank you for showing me the way out.
