TRUTH
The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.
1 Peter 4:7
REFLECTION
Prayer doesn’t seem as important as it is.
I think this has been true at every point in my spiritual adventure-including right now.
As a kid, prayer was ephemeral and simple all at once. I picked up the motions and thanks to good mentorship and parenting, got to see it in action a lot.
As a teen, I drifted away but wasn’t self-assured enough to disown the habits of the faith.
Through the swings of addiction, prayer became habitual and sincere. But only in moments of doubt or pain. It lacked the roots of commitment.
In early sobriety, prayer was prescribed and meaningful. But I quickly wanted the promises of a deep spiritual life before I put in the work.
My deepest flaw is still a spiritual impatience driven by misappropriated good intentions.
Through the last two decades, I have learned how to pray a little bit.
I’ve learned the importance of the daily habit.
I’ve learned the necessity of using scripture instead of always trusting my own mind.
I’ve learned the willingness to be quiet.
I’ve learned the difficulty of listening.
I’ve learned the frustration of waiting.
I’ve learned how very little I know and how very fragile my walk has been.
I have slept through much of my life, but I pray now for the alertness to get busy with the rest of it.
God, thank you for the patience you’ve shown me.
