Letting Go of Myself

A lifetime ordeal

TRUTH

…for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭13‬

REFLECTION

It’s not hard to imagine a devil on your shoulder. We need only look back a little to see where our thoughts and actions have been dictated by that gremlin of our heart.

No, our heart is not an automatically good and well-meaning device to live by. It breathes out the means to the desires we feed it.

Why should it be a stretch to believe that God, then is living in us, directing our very thoughts and actions?

We aren’t automatons, though.

We have an abundance of choice in the matter.

And we seem to be in constant pursuit of easy ways to get little hits of pleasure.

Easy is lazy, though. Easy kills us, one paper cut at a time.

The corner to turn is right in front of us every day. It’s the choice between coasting and growing. It’s the impetus our conscience can pursue to begin to renew itself.

There’s always a choice.

The choices start big—to relapse or not.

Then they narrow into the fringes of our days—to dwell on self or not.

Then they poke into the fabric of our desires—to seek satisfaction or salvation.

Then they disrupt our thoughts—to seek pleasure or service.

The real crux of the problem is that despite evidence to the contrary, I still want to believe the lies that I know what’s best and most satisfying for myself.

Letting go is a lifetime ordeal.

God, I want to hear your voice and yours alone.
