TRUTH
What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
Mark 8:36
REFLECTION
Most of my days are caught up in non-eternal work.
It can feel never-ending, but it’s usually the minutia of a day like any other with concerns like many others with consequences that may echo, at most, for a little while.
But I typically carry the weight of eternity with each of those decisions. The false weight I’ve assigned myself not because of any true thing, but because it gives a little more meaning to the actions I’m carrying out.
Even when I am begrudgingly walking through my tasks. Perhaps more so when this is the case.
I can get a silly pleasure from acting like a self-sacrificial servant to things that are temporal.
I want my work to matter. And by this, I mean all my earthly work. Sure, I want to perform well in my jobs, but I want to adopt a kingdom-view of all the tasks that I am involved with.
This involves both a drive from within as well as a pointed direction away from self-serving. I must misdirect myself.
I cannot be the point. That tracks right back to the addictive behaviors of the past when all things worked together for my own good.
I must point toward Him in all things.
I must pry my hands off of the levers I think will get me what I want.
Letting go sucks…only because I don’t do it enough to see its benefits.
God, help me desire the things of the Spirit.
