Action

Happy New Year.

This marks the third year of publishing these reflections, and I’ve got a bit of a challenge for those that care to partake.

No pressure, but my 9-year-old is on board, so you know, if he can do it…

The daily reflections continue to go out, and you’ll find them below as normal.

I published the full book of them last fall, and that’s the best way to support this project.

Reflections are great, but action is better.

I’ve selected 52 verses for 2026.

One per week.

To memorize.

Like a boss.

Join us.

Verse 1 highlights the overarching reason to do something like this.

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you

Psalm 119:11

I usually default to ESV, but this is NIV for two very scholarly reasons:

  1. It’s my challenge 😀

  2. I like “hidden” over “stored”. It just sounds better

Hit reply and let me know what questions you have. I’ll bring some of my own memory techniques to the email tomorrow.

Remember, we’ve got an entire 7 days to memorize one measly sentence.

This is easy.

Or, at least, it doesn’t have to be hard.

You got this.

Reflection

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

2 Corinthians 4:7

Jars of clay: it’s an ancient metaphor for the human body that wouldn’t resonate with me as much as it does were it not for the 90’s band who took the phrase as their name and had at least one hit.

But it’s an apt picture of the addict and alcoholic. What better description than one of brokenness?

And indeed, a broken clay vessel is worthless if its purpose is to hold something.

Luckily, we find that our purpose is not to hold onto something, nor is our strength found in storing it up.

Rather, we are renewed and strengthened for the day by the degree we pour into others.

And as we give out of our brokenness, God continues to pour into us.

One day at a time.

We become vessels of transmission rather than storage. His Spirit flows through us and is seen by others because (not in spite) of our broken parts.

God, keep me broken in just the right ways.
