TRUTH
Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.
2 Corinthians 3:5
REFLECTION
I am a weak anchor. In fact, every time I attempt to rely solely on myself, I either fall short or give up.
I still reach for this very human ideal, though. The idea of self-sufficiency is alluring.
And sure, there are loads of examples that look like the bootstrapped work of the self-made man. The seeming lack of reliance is attractive.
And for earthly things this is good. It’s enough for some satisfaction.
I’ve tasted some. The dilemma comes after success. The pickle is lying in bed with nothing but the thoughts of what’s next.
We will grapple for more until either there is no more, or we are no more.
I have never been satisfied in something that outlasts my desires.
I think we have an infinite capacity for desire. I think our hearts are black holes for anything we let near enough to them.
Those things never get back out. I consume. I become.
How vital it is then for me to fill up with the goodness that will persevere through all circumstances with me.
The only infinite fuel available is spiritual. And the toolkit to recharge with this infinite energy from our creator remains fairly constant through the centuries.
Prayer, meditation, fasting, fellowship, quiet time, worship, and scripture memory, which is just meditation in action.
God, help me orient my desires on the infinite.
