TRUTH
For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.
2 Corinthians 2:15
REFLECTION
It’s really important how I act.
Not the disingenuous mutterings of trying to put up a facade.
Even for good intentions, this is a terrible idea. People sniff out posers in seconds.
Rather, I mean how I confront the normal, everyday stuff that life seems to be made of.
How do I handle promotions? How do I handle despair? How do accept tragedy? How do I accept praise?
Following Christ doesn’t exempt me from anything except the burden of trying to save myself.
Acceptance can indeed free me of every chain that would threaten to tie me down to circumstances and beat me into submission through self-pity.
But for acceptance to really work, it’s got to accompany action.
Acting my way into right thinking rather than trying to think my way out of a spiritual or emotional mess.
No, we shouldn’t expect this to magically happen in every hard circumstance. We aren’t exempt from despair. But we don’t have to stay there, and we are certainly never alone.
Over time, the spiritual muscles of trudging toward God in the midst of trials will necessarily grow strong.
My reflex should become reliance more and more.
And as I rely on Him more often for the courage to do the next right thing, I can rejoice in the knowledge that this brings glory to Him, peace to me and maybe even encouragement to someone else.
God, help me despair well.
